Banana flower Scientific Name: Musa Availability: year round The banana flower is the flower of the banana. If you open the inside, you can see small flowers that would eventually turn into bananas. When you cut the flower open, rub it with lime or lemon juice and wrap with plastic to prevent oxidization. The flavour is a little starchy and bitter, and is normally eaten as a complement to a dish as a side vegetable. You can also fry or boil it Preparation: To prepare the flower for cooking, remove and discard outer bracts until the inner, paler portion is revealed. Some recipes advise steaming the whole blossom for 20 minutes or so before cutting into it. Allow to cool before slicing. |
