Tahitian Fresh Vanilla Pods
Oakleaf started importing vanilla pods directly from Tahiti in 2008. This was intended to compliment our Bourbon Vanilla beans that we import direct from Madagascar - not to compete with them.
In 1848 "Vanilla Aromatica" plants were imported into Tahiti. Just two years later "Vanilla Fragran" plants were imported. The two species were skilfully crossed to obtain the most appreciated cultivated variety in Tahiti - "Vanilla Tahitensis".
Fertilization goes through many complicated processes and takes nine months to reach full maturity. The fruit is then gathered when it is a brownish yellow colour. The harvest is planned very strictly according to a calendar established by the "Green Vanilla Control Commission" which proves what a vitally important product this is to the farming community and indeed Tahiti itself.
The "Vanilla Tahitensis" variety has the advantage of not splitting at maturity. Harvesting will always be delayed to ensure the fruit is fully mature as the flavour and aromatic characteristics will then have their full intensity.
Curing, which involves browning, rinsing, sun curing, air drying, packing, maturation and correct storing are all vital stages to guarantee the final quality, that of what is universally regarded as the finest vanilla pods in the world. Curing takes a further four to five months, this stage is crucial and if it is not done correctly it can ruin all the work that went into the planting, growing and harvesting.
Oakleaf work closely with a well established and respected producer who also supply some top importers in France, we are delighted to be their importer in the UK. The pods are always soft, plump and aromatic, a superb intense quality.
The pods are packed in 250g vacuum-packed sachets. Always store in a dark, dry and cool area but never freeze or store in a refrigerator.
